This study examines the trend and implications of China’s foreign direct investments (FDI) in Malaysia, assessing how these investments align with the nation’s development aspirations. Malaysia’s government seeks to attract high-quality foreign investments to strengthen economic sustainability and drive national growth. Since 2015, FDI from China has surged, making China Malaysia’s top FDI contributor. Chinese investments are no longer limited to the energy and real estate sectors but have expanded into sectors like transportation, tourism, education, technology, metals, finance, and agriculture. This study finds that Chinese investments offer Malaysia limited job opportunities and technology transfer. On the other hand, Malaysia offers China new market access and natural resources. Additionally, China has strengthened its soft power influence in Malaysia through these economic ties. These findings contribute to evaluating whether foreign investments align with Malaysia’s national interests.
