Journal publication is an important KPI for evaluating academic performance and research quality in universities. However, it has become a profit-driven industry, disregarding knowledge development and dissemination for the betterment of humanity. The obsession with publishing in international journals reveals deep-seated Eurocentrism within Malaysia's leadership and academia. This dependence on biased Western recognition and standards highlights how Western dominance and colonisation of the mind still prevail. Strengthening national identity, alongside supportive government and university policies, is crucial for empowering local journal publications and fostering intellectual growth in Malaysia. Academics must also be smart and courageous in leveraging their strengths to challenge the control and exploitation of publishing companies. Furthermore, Malaysian society needs to cultivate a deeper culture of reading and critical inquiry to meet the aspirations of elevating the standing of Bahasa Melayu and advancing research that benefits national development.
